GUMI (グミ) is an official mascot character of Megpoid (メグッポイド / Meguppoido) which is a singing synthesizer application software powered by Yamaha's Vocaloid2 and was published by INTERNET Co.,Ltd.

Concept/Konseputo(コンセプト):
Gumi was the second VOCALOID to be released by the company Internet Co., Ltd and had a more retro-futuristic approach than Gackpo had. Gumi's 2009 concept illustrations were created by artist Yuuki Masami, a manga artist from Hokkaidō, Japan . Gumi's age has not been officially revealed however she is thought to be 17 years old. Her character item is a carrot. Some of Gumi's first demos were included as .VSQ files that came with the software.

Etymology/Gogen(語源):
Gumi's name is derived from the childhood nickname of her voice provider Megumi Nakajima, a voice actress and singer.The software name, "Megpoid", was taken from the provider's name "Megumi." The second half, the "poid", is short for "like Vocaloid," the full implied name of this product is a "Megumi-like Vocaloid."

The name Megpoid also evolved from this - poid can be roughly translated into "sounds like" in Japanese, so the name Megpoid was supposed to roughly mean "sounds like Megumi". For the sake of simplicity, I will refer to both software and avatar as simply “Gumi” from this point on.

My Appearance on how it's based on/Soreha ni motodzuite iru hōhō no rukkusu(それはに基づいている方法のルックス):
It has been suggested, though never confirmed, that Gumi’s original design was loosely-based on Ranka Lee, a character from the Japanese animated series Macross Frontier. Just like Gumi, Ranka Lee has shoulder-length green hair and an outfit that is mostly pale yellow and orange, but the most compelling argument for this comparison is that Megumi Nakajima provided the voice for both Ranka Lee and Gumi.The original avatar character of the software was drawn by the illustrator Masami Yuuki (ゆうきまさみ Yuuki Masami). Her design is often said to be influenced by Ranka Lee's character (one of the first roles done by Megumi Nakajima as Seiyuu). Ranka Lee's most main outfit (which she wears for the notable song Seikan Hikou) had the colors green, yellow, and orange. This has never been confirmed as anything more than coincidence, but still is a popular assumption with both Japanese and overseas Vocaloid fans.

My History/Watashi no rekishi(私の歴史):
If ever there was a Vocaloid that could be voted "most likely to succeed", it's this one. In the categories by which Nico Nico measures popularity, Gumi's statistics have consistently rivaled and in one case even surpassed that of Hatsune Miku. Now she sings in English and is starting to make inroads into North America and Europe. Gumi's enormous potential in the English-speaking world has caught the attention of Vocaloid fans everywhere. Clearly, the sky's the limit for Gumi.

Megpoid was the name given to the Vocaloid 2 software created by INTERNET Co. Ltd. of Japan, when it was released on June 25, 2009. Gumi (pronounced GOO-mee) has been alternately described as the official mascot or the avatar character of Megpoid (in other words the character manifestation of the voice produced by that software).

Gumi has bright green eyes, similar in color to her hair. The color changes though, depending on her mood (not drastically, but darker if she's mad, brighter when happy, bluer if she's sad...that kinda thing). Her hair, which is green and shoulder length, with two tendrils at the front which frame her face and extend a bit longer. She has a pair of red goggles on her head, and a headphone set. She wears an orange midriff like vest, with a pale yellow edging along the top and a white ruffle at the chest. She wears a white collar with a black band with a ruby at her neck, and similar cuffs with red buttons on them. She wears a orange gauzy piece on her stomach leading to her orange frilly skirt that is on top of a white (slightly longer) frilly skirt. She has a darker orange belt strip with a green belt threading through it. On her left leg is a pinkish stocking band framed with lace. She has white knee-high boots edged in green.

Personality:

Gumi is fairly down to Earth, though she tends to day-dream quite often. She's not that outgoing, but is rather sociable and plucky around those she knows, even going so far as acting bubbly. Her confidence level is a bit low, as many tend to bash her choice in clothes, and critic her voice, saying she's 'unoriginal'. She keeps to herself, but can engage in a conversation, so long as it's not about herself. She loves to sing more than anything, and her favorite food are carrots, which she likes to create new dishes with. Tries hard to please others. Occasionally, after enough stress, egging on and bashing, she can become quite the nasty person, but she tends to throw almost all her emotion into creating, and singing, new songs.
